Trying to continue catching up with our travels last year. We've been lucky to have Rand's parents come visit every year that we've lived here (they'll be coming again in May when the baby is due) and last year they stopped to see us before they started a European tour that included tickets to the Passion play (a day long dramatization of the life of Christ that is only reenacted every 10 years in Oberamergau, Germany about 3 hours from us). Their tour started in Berlin so we decided to visit Dresden and Potsdam before dropping them off in Berlin. Dresden is in the former East Germany and is a city that was badly destroyed during World War II (90% of it was destroyed) so it was amazing to see it rebuilt again. When you see pictures of the devastation after being bombed it's unimaginable where they would even start let alone how many years it would take to rebuild a city like that. Dresden is located on the Elbe river and the architecture of the buildings are just gorgeous.

Dresden's Frauenkirche- this church was completely destroyed so the dark stones you see were recovered from the wreckage and put back in the same spots that they originally existed. This church also had the original iron cross that was mangled in the bombing inside but we weren't allowed to take pictures in there.

I think this was the Opera house that was right next to the palace.

Dresden is located near our LDS temple in Freiberg so it was great to have Rand's parents with us so that we could all attend that weekend.
Potsdam, a city just south of Berlin was where the royals used to live and has several palaces that you can visit. Unfortunately, I ended up with a stomach virus the next day so I did not get out of the car to tour the Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam but here are some pictures that Rand took.
