It's been a while

Wow, it has been awhile. I apologize for the long hiatus from blogging. It felt like we were in transit forever and even when we finally got into our house it has taken more than a month to get our Internet connected. Talk about feeling disconnected from the world. I sure have a lot of catching up to do (especially reading everyone else's blogs).

We have officially been in Germany for 9 weeks now. We are definitely getting adjusted to a different culture and language but are loving it so far. Some of you know that we spent some time vacationing in France and Spain for 2 weeks before we arrived here in Germany so I wanted to post some of those pictures first.

Rand's mom, Marsha, met us in France for a fun week there. We stayed about an hour outside of Paris in a quiet little town called Connelles, on the Seine River, that Marsha found for us. We spent a day in Rouen, a city on the Seine that happened to be having an Armada Festival that week so we were able to tour a bunch of beautiful clipper ships that dock there for the Festival.

Another day we drove up to Normandy to visit one of the many World War II museums in Bayeux. From there we drove out to Omaha Beach. It was very cold and windy but it was neat to see the bunkers in the side of the cliffs that the Germans hid in on D-Day. We then visited the American Cemetery which was an awesome site (one of our favorites). You probably remember this cemetery from the movie "Saving Private Ryan", but it is built on the top of a cliff overlooking the ocean and is just beautiful with all of the white cross grave markers.

We also went to Versailles Palace and loved walking around the beautiful gardens, unfortunately the kids weren't as excited about the inside of the palace so we didn't spend much time there, I guess we'll have to go back sometime w/o them.

We saw the home of Claude Monet in Giverny (still one of my favorite artists) and loved the house and gardens around it. They even have the lily pond and Japanese bridge so famous from his paintings there.

Our final day we spent in Paris which we jam packed with as many sites as we could manage. We saw Notre Dame and Sacre Couer Cathedrals, The Louvre (not the inside unfortunately, again the kids) and Tewillery Gardens, the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triumph (which we drove around on the Champs Elysee, not on purpose mind you, we missed our turn and yes it was very scary, fortunately Rand is an excellent driver). Anyway it was lots of fun even toting around 2 toddlers without a stroller (we both had very strong arms by the end of the day). It was so nice to have Marsha with us for an extra set of hands, and grandmas are so good at keeping kids happy.

Two lovely french ladies who let Owen and Evie stand under their umbrella while we waited for the rain to stop.

Stay tuned for the rest of our updates on Spain and Austria...
